Northfield Public Library

Members Present: Jasper, Ryan, Emma, Maddie G, Maddie S, Nate, Seth, Chen, Will, Olivia, Emma, Elizabeth(via text) and New Member Maia Garcia!

1. Welcome Maren Levad from Minnesota History Society & TAB Introductions

Maren Levad shared some free teen workshop options such as State of Me, Steampunk History, Minnesota Myths, Minnesota Comics, Bandolier Bags, and Etiquette School for Young Ladies. TAB had interest in Steampunk, Minnesota Comics, and Etiquette School for Young Ladies. Will tell the winner when announced.

2.Teen Advisory Board Roles & Responsibilities (copied from By-Laws)

OFFICERS

A) The officers shall be a president, a vice president, a secretary and a treasurer elected from the members of TAB. All officers should make a special effort to attend all meetings, programs, and special events sponsored by TAB.

B) The president of TAB will work closely with the TAB advisor to organize TAB meetings. The TAB advisor will assist the president in creating the meeting agenda and will preside over TAB meetings. The president will act as the contact person for other TAB members who want items added to the agenda.

C) The vice-president will serve as the president in his or her absence. The vice-president will serve as membership coordinator, keeping track of active and inactive members and new applications. They will be in charge of promoting and recruitment of new membership. The vice-president will inform and remind all members of upcoming meetings, programs and special events.

D) The secretary will keep minutes of TAB meetings keeping them available to all via email and on the TABleau Blog on the library’s website. The secretary will be responsible for the attendance sheets at all meetings and inform the vice-president of absent members at meetings. The secretary will read the highlights of the previous meeting’s minutes at the beginning of each meeting. The secretary will keep track of all votes taken at each meeting. The secretary will serve as the president in the absence of the presiding president and vice-president.

E) Treasurer oversees the management and reporting of TAB’s finances. TAB’s funds will be established with a TAB account at a bank. Duties include:

· Bank account maintenance – co- signing checks/debit card

· Financial transaction oversight – Being knowledgeable about who has access to the organization’s funds, and any outstanding bills or debts owed, as well as developing systems for keeping cash flow manageable

· Budgets – Developing the annual budget as well as comparing the actual revenues and expenses incurred against the budget

Reports – Keeping the board informed on a monthly basis via the agenda

3. Elections and Swearing In!

With The Ballot Ready and Elizabeth Texting in her speech, we only had to do a re-vote for President between Elizabeth and Chen. Election Results were:

Maddie Guyott: Secretary

Ryan Pritchard: Treasurer

Officers were sworn in on a really cool, hundred year-old book about the history of the bible.

Hi there! I'm Chen, the new TAB president, and I'll be highlighting a few of the changes we'll be making in the near future.

First and foremost, you might notice our new and update online presence--we've changed the design of this blog considerably (though things are still subject to shuffle around a little as we add polish here and there), and there's a completely new facebook page for all you to follow, right here! We're planning to be considerably more active online from now on, so keep updated!

Secondly, you might have noticed important internal reshuffling going on in TAB. We've decided to adopt an official series of rules and bylaws, which include the election of officers. I am pleased to report that your new TAB officers are:

Chen Ye (myself) - President

Maia Garcia - Vice President

Maddie Guyott - Secretary

Ryan Prichard - Treasurer

Elections will be held once a year, and we expect this change to allow for TAB to react and perform much faster, not to mention to have more productive meetings :-).

There are a few other minor changes that TAB has adopted just to streamline and update things, which I'm sure you'll find welcoming.

Well, that's really all for this post. I'm really excited to say that this is the beginning of a new era for TAB, and that we hope to become much more professional, effective, and well known throughout Northfield.

Cabin Fever Update!

Cabin Fever Library Mini-golf, laser tag and video game night has added DOMINOS' PIZZA! Slices of their yummy pizza will be available for purchase during Saturday nights event. We also want to thank the Northfield Golf Club on their loan of many putters! Come have some summery fun at the library Saturday night 6-8!

Play golf, laser tag and video games at the Northfield Public Library! Yep, the library! The library's Teen Advisory Board is putting together a super event to help drive away those winter blahs.

On Saturday, February 26 from 6 until 8 pm there will be a 9 hole mini-golf course, laser tag area and assorted video games set up throughout the library.

People of all ages are invited to play. $5 fee per-person or $15 a foursome. This is the only fundraiser the Teen Advisory Board annually sponsors and the funds raised will be used for teen library material purchase, future events, speakers and programs.

There will be a driving range (for prizes) in the meeting room $1 will get you 3 wiffle golf balls to try to hit a prize.

Mini Golf Hole sponsorships are needed! $75 a hole, gets your name on the hole to support the Library Teen Board and their library programs, materials and events. Each of the 9 holes will be unique. With your sponsorship the TAB members will create a theme of your choice. Your name or business will be prominently featured at the hole. Driving Range prizes are also sought if you would like to donate a prize or the funds to purchase a prize. Your name or business will be featured on the prize. Members of TAB are out in the community gathering support.

Stuff for the Teen Age

For 80 years, New York Public Library staff shared the best titles for teens in an annual list called Books for the Teen Age.
Last year, Books for the Teen Age became Stuff for the Teen Age, a multimedia, multi-format, targeted, and teen-tested list of the best of the year in teen books, music, graphic novels, movies, games, and more.

This year, Stuff for the Teen Age becomes a blog.

We started with this list of the 100 best titles of last year, and we’ll be posting about our picks from the list, our picks from the current year, and a variety of other topics related to teen books and media.

Haunted Library II

Yes, we're doing it again- haunting the library for one night only! Saturday, Oct. 30th from 7:30 to 9. Tours are every 15 minutes. The St. Olaf Theatre Club has been advising us on make-up, costumes and settings! Thanks again for a grant from the Northfield Healthy Community Initiative- with a $1 (or a food donation to the Nfld Food Shelf) you can tour the haunted library the enjoy some creepy snacks and games in the meeting room. It will be scary- for people in grade 6 and up.

Writing contest- you could win money!!!

The Minnesota Humanities Center, along with local co-sponsors the St. Paul Pioneer Press and the Minnesota Council of Teachers of English, invites Minnesota’s fourth through 12^th grade students to enter the 2010-2011 Letters About Literature essay contest.
National Level Judging. Prizes will also be awarded to the 2nd and 3rd place winners.

On each competition level, a panel of national judges for the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress will select six (6) National Winners (2 per Level of Competition) and twelve (12) National Honorable Mention Winners (4 per Level of Competition). The National Winners will receive a $500 Target GiftCard, plus each will secure a $10,000 LAL Reading Promotion Grant in their name for his or her community or school library so that others can experience personal relationships with authors and the stories they tell. The National Honorable Mention Winners will each receive a $100 Target GiftCard, plus each will secure a $1,000 LAL Reading Promotion Grant in their name for his or her community or school library.

People in grades 6-12 are invited to join TAB- the library's TEEN ADVISORY BOARD. Besides helping the library serve teens better it looks GREAT on college and job applications! We meet one night a month and have some special stuff coming up.

1. September's meeting is on Mon. the 13 (not Labor Day the 6th) *6:45 to 8

2. October's meeting has to be moved to Oct. 11 it was originally scheduled for Oct. 4th but--Garrison Keillor is coming that night!! Really!

3. The Friends of the Library Spelling Bee is Thursday, Oct. 7th- do we still want a team???

4. MEA break is Oct. 21-22 Halloween is the next weekend (Sunday) So... when, if, how will we do the Haunted Library????

5. Have a nice start of the new school year and please consider joining TAB.

Members present- Seth, Johanna, Faith, Ryan, Aaron, Ana, Elizabeth and new member Chris Hager!

We mostly talked about mini-golf. We have 4 hole sponsors: Friends of the Library, Northern Gardener, Nfld Entertainment Guide and Tiny's. We traded hole sponsorships for an ad in the Entertainment guide and for Tiny's Hot Dogs. So, so far we have brought in $150. Please try to get some more hole sponsors!
We decided on the hole themes-
1. Friends of the Library- they wanted Booker Faith will be in charge.
2. Nfld Entertainment Guide- they wanted recycling/green ideas. Ana is in charge.
3. no sponsor create a book pile hole?
4. Alice in Wonderland. Johanna is in charge.
5. Northern Gardener- elevator hole no one claimed it yet
6. Tropical theme- we can use stuff the library has- no one claimed it yet
7. Music hole- Elizabeth is in charge, Brandon emailed and he will help with this one.
8. Our model train- Aaron is in charge
9. Tiny's- the pipe down the stairs hole- no one claimed it yet
If we get sponsors we can change/modify the holes.
Please come in any afternoon and start working on you creations! I'm here and can get you started.
We then "weeded" the YA section- removed old, obsolete or worn out books.
We were finished @ 8- THANKS to all who attended!!!

We will be creating a winter wonderland for our Lionell "Polar Express" model train and show it along with all the other model trains at the library during the Winter Walk on Dec. 4th.

We will also be selling cookies to raise money for more programs!

TAB members- Johanna, Aaron, Brandon, Breanna, Ryan, Faith and Sarah are ready to host the "Too Cool for School-so we're jammin' at the library" music coffee house THIS Saturday night from 6-9!

The library doors will open at 6 pm on Saturday, Oct. 25th!

The first performer is the band "2nd Chance" then Carlos Wolle, followed by the band "Feedback Frenzy" will begin @ 8 pm."

Thanks to last year's fund raisers Friends of the Library Spelling Bee and the TAB's Library Mini Golf we have new furniture in the YA area. Now comes a new paint color and accessories! Come in and check it out!

Volunteer Opportunities at the Library

Young Adult Opportunities

Home Bound Delivery
Deliver materials to those who are unable to travel to the library. This might entail selecting materials of interest to the reader and exchanging them for the items that are ready to return.

Gardening Inside & Out
Assist staff in keeping the library plants and grounds maintained by raking, pruning, watering, planting etc.

Satellite Collections
Deliver 30 or so items to our senior living facilities every 6 weeks. This includes selecting materials, and exchanging them for the items that have been there for 6 weeks.

Library Page Summer Reading Program
For kids who will finish 5th grade and up. Beginning in April volunteers are assisting in the preparation of the Summer Reading Program then helping during the summer.

Adopt-a-Shelf
Keep materials in order in the children’s or YA areas. This can be as extensive as you would like. You can oversee a shelf or section on a regular basis.

TAB the Teen Advisory Board
A monthly commitment to serve the library by helping select materials for the YA collection.

Booker Assistant
Bring early literacy experiences to children at day cares and at the
summer Books & Stars by helping with check in/out and shelving.

First Steps Early Literacy Center Volunteers
You can help introduce children to basic concepts they need to be ready to read.
Morning and early evenings.
